Find yourselves mesmerised by the rolling waves and setting sun when you look out from the glass walkway or sky hammock at this spectacular, four-storey Polzeath retreat. Sleeping 10 guests, the sumptuous, five-bedroom property sits right opposite the sea, just 20 metres from the beach.

Make your way in downstairs to pop your beach gear in the washing machine in the utility room. Your five super-king-size bedrooms, all of which have en-suite shower rooms and zip-and-link beds that can be made up as twins by prior agreement, are set across this floor and the one above. There are also two family shower rooms within the coastal retreat. Make your way up to the two upper levels to luxuriate in your living spaces. Gaze out to sea from the open-plan, split-level lounge/kitchen/diner, where you can stoke up the wood burner and sip a cocktail you have mixed at the bar. Take turns at preparing meals in the kitchen, then congregate at the table. The very top floor is a superb space for movie nights together, as well as lounging in the hammock or savouring the Atlantic views from the viewing platform. Step out onto the top-floor balcony to prepare a lavish meal in the outdoor kitchen. Relax with a cold drink on either of the two lower-level balconies. Guests have storage and access to three shared outdoor showers. There is on-site parking for two cars, plus one permit for a public car park, 0.5 miles away.

Savour the sunshine and the sea air from Polzeath Beach or take the family to Daymer Bay, just 1 mile away. Catch the ferry from Rock, 2.5 miles away, across the estuary to Padstow. Tintagel, which features in the stories about King Arthur, is 12.5 miles away and well worth a visit during your stay.

Cornwall never ceases to amaze, and Gwel Trelsa proved a new wonder, a universe removed from the holiday rentals of the 1980s when I first visited, when nylon sheets and a teasmaid were the height of modernism. In the spirit of confession, it would be wrong not to flag up the value-added virtues of our chosen holiday home for a control freak like me. I was so content in my beachside eyrie that I barely stirred from it. The teenagers came and went, renting boards from the surf shop and boogie boarding for thrills, while saving enough energy to renegotiate their curfew on a nightly basis. Like Lowry on vacation, in the early-morning light and made blurry by sea spray, stick-like figures were framed in the rectangle of our elevated glass fronted sitting room.
