St Mawgan Village
For those of you who have been to Cornwall before, have you ever had the inside knowledge to take a trip to the quintessential village of St Mawgan? If not believe us that it has to be a strong contender for one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Conveniently located just 4 miles from north east Newquay and 2.5 miles from the stunning Watergate Bay, where better to base yourself if you are looking for a village location. This hidden gem provides many attractions including a flower covered Post Office and General store, its' own ford to paddle in and a traditional village green where locals can be found playing a spot of cricket on a sunny summers afternoon. St Mawgan is even home to its' own Japanese bonsai garden.History is in abundance as well at St Mawgan with its very own 13th Century Parish church. The church was originally a cruciform building of the 13th century but was enlarged by a south aisle and the upper part of the tower in the 15th. The unusual rood screen and bench ends are noteworthy and there are many monumental brasses to members of the Arundell family. The Arundell family were the original land owners of St Mawgan and owned The Manor House in the village called Lanherne. In 1794 the Arundells gave this Manor House as a convent for Carmelite nuns. Still today an enclosed community of Franciscan Sisters are here guarding Cuthbert's relics.
For avid walkers and nature lovers this village is certainly one to visit. With the River Menalhyl flowing through on its way down to Mawgan Porth, many birds, bees and butterflies are drawn to the flora and fauna it helps keep nourished. With walks through forestry land, countryside and even a path directly down to Mawgan Porth Beach it provides variety for all ramblers.

The closest beaches to the village are Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay. Mawgan Porth is dog friendly and offers a great family environment. With seasonal lifeguards at hand, an organic supermarket providing hot pasties, Deli sandwiches and ice creams and a welcoming pub what more do you need. If however you are up for a bit more adventure then why not try the Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay? Watergate Bay is a Mecca for kite surfers and with a lesson at the Extreme Academy, you'll see why it's the ultimate combination of wind and waves! Again providing a lovely café called The Beach Hut with fresh cakes and coffees, or if you are feeling a bit extravagant why not head to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen and sit in the glass fronted restaurant and watch the surfers tussle with the waves.
