  • Within walking distance of the Tall Ships
  • A perfect place to relax by a historic quay where time has stood still
  • Great for exploring the glorious Cornish coast
  • Close to the delightful villages Fowey and Mevagissey
Property code: 43123

This beautifully modernised stone former customs house, ideally sized for a small family or two couples, is in the village of Charlestown, home to famous Charlestown Harbour and Shipwreck Museum. Here you can wander the Georgian stone quays, used for filming the Poldark series, and see an ever-changing show of traditional and historic sailing craft large and small, from tall ships to local fishing smacks.

Here traditional solidity blends with modern comfort in a bright and simple style. There's nothing old-fashioned about furnishings and equipment, however. A modern open plan kitchen/dining/living area has everything you'll need including an inviting leather sofa, and the bedrooms upstairs are flexible for families – one can be king sized or twin. The shower room is compact and smartly tiled. Exposed timber beams and natural materials anchor the design to the original structure. Clever use of exotic details evokes the romance of voyaging to foreign lands – appropriate in a village which celebrates the age of sail.

The village's sandy beach is also within walking distance, and you've a choice of nearby shops and pubs. St Austell, just 1 mile away, has excellent shopping and dining choices, and the South Cornish coast with its South West Coast Path has walks of breathtaking beauty and many attractions for day trips. The Eden project is just 3 miles away and will fascinate with its botanical wonders, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are within 7 miles. For a different type of seaside town, Fowey 7 miles eastward is tucked inside a steep natural harbour. A National cycle trail can lead you to pretty Mevagissey in around 30 minutes if you're feeling energetic.

  • 2 bedrooms: 1 double, and 1 king sized bed on the upper floor (which can be made up as a twin on request must be requested at time of booking). Please note that the upper floor bedroom has a pitched ceiling with low headroom on each side.
  • Bathrooms both on lower floor; Shower room with WC (with underfloor heating), additional separate WC
  • Smart TV and DVD in open plan living space
  • Kitchen comprises of electric oven and induction hob, microwave oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer
  • Bed linen and towels (not beach towels) included.
  • Electric, heating and Wi-Fi included
  • 1 small well behaved dog welcome
  • Beach, harbour, pubs, restaurants and shops all within a few minutes walking distance
  • Secure allocated gated off-road parking for 1 car
  • Please note that there is no outside seating space at this property
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 17:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details
  • 1 dog allowed. Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week
  • There is an Accidental Damage Deposit of £200 when booking at this property, however this may be waived for £25. We’ll provide more details about this when booking your holiday.

A wonderful quirky but very pleasant, well equipped cottage in an excellent location. We thoroughly enjoyed Charlestown - the pubs, the TV filming, the old harbour, walks from the property etc. and it was only a 5 minute walk to the harbour.

We had a fab stay at Customs House Roost for our mini-moon. Great location. We are used to a super-king bed, and struggled a little with the smaller double bed. Upstairs was a larger bed, which was unfortunately a bit too low for us, but ideal for a younger couple, or as single beds for children. The accommodation is well-equipped with everything wRead moree needed for a really cosy stay. We had a couple of small issues which were sorted really quickly and professionally by the hosts & housekeeper. Hide

Lovely place. Charlestown is a lovely authentic fishing village with some superb food options. St Austell not so much but no need to rush there in our opinion!

This was a fantastic holiday base. Very clean and welcoming. Just a short stroll down to the harbour and beaches. Parking included which was a plus as the area got very busy. Hosts provided lots of information regarding the local area which really helped deciding where to eat.

We really enjoyed our stay in Charlestown. The cottage was well equipped, comfortable and in an excellent location; the children particularly enjoyed their upstairs room. The weather was mostly awful so it was great to have a comfortable home to come back to when we were soaking wet. We would heartily recommend this accommodation.

Really clean cottage with modern interior ands well-equipped kitchen with integrated AEG appliances. Convenient secure gated parking to the rear of the property, although entry is a little awkward/tight, as noted in other reviews. Weather was not brilliant during our stay so we did make good use of the comfy sofa and SmartTV. Good shower. CharlestoRead morewn is very quaint and there's the convenience of St Austell's facilities up the road with Asda, Tesco and Lidl and plenty of places delivering food. Hide

My Wife and I loved our stay at Customs House Roost. A beautiful cosy house in a fantastic location. Just a 2-3 minute walk to Charlestown harbour, and a short drive to Tesco. It's obvious that a lot of care and attention have gone into the decor of the property. The gated car park is a big plus, but it can be a little on the tight side if the otheRead morer spaces are occupied. Mobile reception is pretty poor, but is compensated with good WiFi quality. Highly recommend! Hide

A lovely apartment with a fantastic location. Within a 5 minute walk of beach, harbour and many restaurants. May not be ideal for families with young children as no outdoor space, and stone steps to reach apartment. However, a stair gate is provided inside property. Overall a well maintained property inside a unique old Cornish building.
